Date night does not have to be complicated or expensive! Playing games at home is a perfect idea for any couple who is trying to save money or is just looking for a fun, relaxing evening! Since we have a toddler, my husband and I are always looking for new ways to spend our evenings without having to leave the house or find a babysitter. We have found games of all kinds to be an excellent source of entertainment and connection for us.
Reasons to Play Two-Player Date Night Games
- Financial- Most couples already have games, or at least a deck of cards, in their home. If you do not, there are several options linked below to choose from. Since games are most likely already in your home, there is no need to spend money on something new! Plus, playing games at home means you don’t have to spend money on gas or food to leave the house and you don’t have to spend money on a babysitter!
- Easy- Games are as easy as grabbing the box or deck of cards and playing! If you have more mental space one day, learning a new game can be fun. Otherwise, playing an old classic that you already know the rules to is as easy as riding a bike.
- Comfortable- Since you don’t have to leave the house to play board games together, you can be as comfy as you’d like! Wear pajamas, wear sweat pants. Anything goes!
- Fun- Above all, playing games with your spouse is an easy way to spend intentional time together. Laugh, problem solve, relax, and enjoy each other’s company!

Two-Player Date Night Board Games
It has been very fun to learn board games together. It is especially bonding when one of us already knows how to play the game and we can teach the other. We have learned how to play several different board games together. Here are a few of our favorites:
Strategic Board Games
Mexican Train Dominoes is a super fun competitive domino game. This can be a multi-player game as well, so it has multiple uses. Additionally, this particular set has instructions for several different games. So, if Mexican Train is not your style, then you should be able to find a different domino game that you and your spouse will love.
Dominion is a deck building game, making it more unique. This is also a competitive game in which you collect cards in your deck to ultimately have more points than your spouse at the end of the game. With so many options for the cards you can put in your deck, the game changes every time you play. This gives you an opportunity to think outside of the box and use problem solving skills to win!
2-Player Catan is a card game or dice game version of Catan. There are a couple of different options for 2 player Catan. It has the same fun energy of the original Settlers of Catan with an easier, two-player twist! Collect resources and build your cities to have points than your spouse by the end of the game.
Risk is another competitive game that my husband loves! There is a lot of strategy to this game as you figure out how to defeat your spouse’s military to take over the entire map. If you or your spouse likes strategic games, this is definitely the one for you!
Classic Board Games
Chess and Checkers is a classic two-player game that just can’t be overlooked. If you are feeling more mentally drained one night, checkers is a perfect, low-key option. If you’re feeling more spirited, practice your strategic abilities with chess.
Battleship is another classic two-player game. Take out your spouse’s ships and get more insight into the way their brain works by figuring out their map layout!
Strategic Tic Tac Toe is a fun twist on classic tic-tac-toe. This game has pieces that are larger and smaller, like a Russian nesting doll. This allows you to cover your spouse’s pieces giving your more opportunities to win!
Connect 4 is yet another classic game that will provide hours of fun for your and your spouse!
Mancala is a fun, strategic game in which you try to collect more marbles than your spouse. It is a quick game that does not take up too much mental space, so it’s perfect for those days that you’re feeling more drained.
Two-Player Date Night Videogames
Sometimes a videogame sound more appealing than a board game, especially when you can make a special night out of it with fun snacks and cozy blankets! I did not really grow up playing videogames, so my husband has taught me how to play most of these. I’m still not very good at the competitive ones, but giving time for my husband to teach me something new has certainly brought us closer together!

Games to Work Together
Stardew Valley is a game that we were recently introduced to but quickly fell in love with! It is a very relaxed game in which you can work together to farm, explore the town, and learn new skills. This game is perfect for a cozy night in.
Animal Crossing is similar to Stardew Valley. This game focuses less on farming and more on building the town, but the idea of working together to learn skills and earn money is the same. Another great option for a calmer night.
There are a couple of videogames we play that I could not find links to. Portal 2 is fantastic game if you are looking to work together. You will have to solve puzzles together to defeat the game, so it is great for building up teamwork.
Competitive Games
Mario Kart is a classic videogame that is more competitive. Race your spouse around different tracks to see who wins!
Super Smash Bros is another classic competitive videogame. Pick a character and either work together to fight bots in the game, or fight against each other!
Lastly, Rocket League is a simple competitive game in which you are cars who play soccer. In this game, you can either be on the same team to defeat the game, or play against each other. I could not find a link for this one either, but it can be found in the Nintendo Switch Game Library.
Two-Player Date Night Card Games
Non-Poker Card Games
Uno the classic card game where you try to give your spouse the entire deck! It may bring you closer together, it may lead to table flipping. You decide.
Uno No Mercy in case classic Uno was not competitive enough for you, you can really test your patience with this version!
Sequence and Sequence Jumbo are both great options that combine strategy and card games for a super fun game night!
Deck of Cards There are so many wonderful, classic games to play with a simple deck of cards! This particular set has 4 decks of cards in it, which is perfect for games that call for multiple decks.
Some of our favorite card games include:
Hand and Foot which is a super fun game that does actually require 4 decks. This is a longer game, so it is perfect for a night with no other plans.
Speed, on the other hand, is a very quick game (as the name suggests) that only requires 1 deck. It is still pretty competitive though, so look out!
Poker Card Games
There seems to be an infinite number of poker games out there, most of which can be adapted to a 2-player version. If you really enjoy poker, here is a Poker Set and a Poker Table Top that will make playing even more fun!
Here are a couple of lists of different games you can play with your spouse: List of Poker Games and List of Card Games. These lists include some classics like Blackjack and Texas Hold ‘Em. There are also some lesser known, but still very fun games such as: drop games like 3, 5, 7 and 1, 2, 3, Midnight baseball, and Pass the Trash. Puzzles
Doing a puzzle together is a little different from playing a game, but it is similar. Puzzles are great for a relaxing night in. You can put some favorite music or a favorite TV show on in the background. Or, just enjoy each other’s company and conversation. Either way, cozy up with your favorite snacks and drinks and work together.
If you have kids or limited space and won’t be able to complete a puzzle in one sitting, here is a Puzzle Board to make it easy to safely pack away your puzzle without having to disassemble it.
