I like to switch up my Christmas tree a little every year, but I do not like the idea of buying all new ornaments each year. When I first moved out on my own, I got simple red, white, and gold ornaments. I simply find new ways to use these every year to create the look I want. This year, I knew I wanted a candy cane look to my tree, so I am using only the red and white ornaments.
Decorating for Christmas does not have to be stressful or super expensive. Learn affordable ways to make a beautiful candy cane Christmas tree by using things you already own and being thrifty.

Use What You Already Have
Chances are, you already have some red and white Christmas tree decorations. This is especially true if you like a more classic Christmas aesthetic. At the very least, you most likely have white lights that can be the base of your Candy Cane Christmas tree (hopefully, they are incandescent to give that classic warm glow).

If you don’t have traditional ornaments, you can try to find some ribbon or natural elements like holly to add to your tree. To add more natural elements to your red and white theme, try making these cranberry and popcorn garlands!
Utilize Affordable Stores
If you can find absolutely nothing red and white in your house, then utilize affordable stores. I got all of my ornaments at the dollar store the first year I lived alone and I still use them! They offer classic bulb ornaments and some cute decorative ones that would still fit the color scheme.
Thrifting is also an affordable way to find new ornaments for your tree. Check your local thrift stores in the weeks leading up to Christmas when they put their holiday décor out. You just might find some winners!

Another option is Hobby Lobby. They usually have sales leading up to Christmas so you can get better quality ornaments for a good price still. Additionally, you can shop after Christmas when ornaments are marked down in order to use them next year!
How to Create a Candy Cane Christmas Tree
Begin with stringing lights on the tree. I used a pattern of white and red lights to create a candy cane look. Incandescent lights are preferred to give a warm glow.
Next, add the ornaments in order from largest to smallest in order to make sure there is room for everything on your tree. I began by adding red and white floral picks as those were the largest décor I had. If you are adding things like garland to your tree, that would be added before any ornaments.

Then, I added all of the red and white bulb ornaments in order from largest to smallest. I used wire hooks to hang these on the tree.

Next, we added all of the fun ornaments that still fit the red and white theme. This would also be the time to add things like ribbon bows.

Lastly, we added our white Christmas angel to top the Christmas tree.

I chose not to stress about keeping the striped design of a candy cane so that my family could help me decorate without having to tell them where everything goes. I chose to keep the decorating fun instead of “correct.” So, it’s a bit of a hodgepodge, but the candy cane theme still comes across beautifully. We are loving our candy cane tree this year and I hope you love yours as well!
